Why convert BMP to PDF?

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, so even a single screenshot can be several megabytes – too big for many email accounts and upload forms, and some of them don't accept BMP at all. In the PDF, each bitmap is stored losslessly compressed, which usually makes the file considerably smaller without changing a single pixel.

Typical uses

Every image is placed on its own page, centred and scaled to fit A4 or US Letter. The order of the list is the order of the pages. If you need the image as a picture rather than a PDF, convert it to PNG with an image editor first.

  • Drawings and diagrams made in Microsoft Paint.
  • Scans from older scanner software that saves BMP by default.
  • Screenshots from older Windows programs and machine software.

About BMP and PDF files

BMP
BMP is an uncompressed Windows bitmap format. BMP files are large, and many websites and apps don't accept them.
PDF (Portable Document Format)
PDF files look the same on every device and are the standard for invoices, statements, contracts and reports. Digital PDFs store real text; scanned PDFs store images of pages. All PDF tools →

BMP to PDF – frequently asked questions

Will the PDF be smaller than my BMP files?

Usually yes, often much smaller. BMP stores every pixel uncompressed, while the PDF stores the image with lossless compression. How much you save depends on the image.

Does converting BMP to PDF change any pixels?

No. The bitmap is stored losslessly, so every pixel stays the same. It is only displayed scaled to fit the page, never stretched.

Can the PDF page be the same size as my bitmap?

No. BMP to PDF places each image on an A4 or US Letter page, centred with a small margin and scaled to fit. Wide images automatically get a landscape page.

What is the maximum BMP file size?

Each BMP can be up to 50 MB – more than the JPG and PNG to PDF tools allow, because bitmaps are uncompressed. Extremely large bitmaps can still exceed what the browser can process; you then see “is too large to convert in the browser”. The tool is free, with no signup.

Why does my BMP show “could not be read as an image”?

The browser couldn’t decode the file: it is damaged or uses a rare BMP variant. Open it in Paint or another image editor, save it again as a standard 24-bit BMP and add it once more.

How do I put several BMP files into one PDF?

Add them all at once or one after another, put them in order with the arrows and click “Convert to PDF”. Each bitmap becomes one page, and the order of the list is the order of the pages.

Are my BMP files uploaded during the conversion?

No. The bitmaps are converted in your browser, so scans and screenshots from Paint or older programs stay on your device and are never stored on a server.
