Why websites use WebP

Large PNG screenshots and graphics slow down web pages, especially on phones. WebP stores the same picture in a fraction of the size, and every current browser can display it. Smaller images mean faster pages, happier visitors and better results in speed tests such as Google PageSpeed.

Unlike JPG, WebP keeps transparent backgrounds, so logos and cut-out product photos still sit cleanly on any background colour.

Choosing the quality

The conversion uses your browser's own WebP encoder. Chrome, Edge and Firefox support it; in Safari you get a clear message instead of a wrong file.

  • High: visually the same as the PNG for photos and most graphics.
  • Medium: noticeably smaller files; fine for blog images and thumbnails.
  • Screenshots with small text: check the result at 100% zoom before publishing.

About PNG and WebP files

PNG
PNG is a lossless image format that keeps text and sharp edges crisp. Most screenshots are saved as PNG, and it supports transparent backgrounds.
WebP
WebP is a modern image format from Google that makes web images smaller than JPG or PNG. Many websites deliver their pictures as WebP, but some programs and upload forms still don't accept it.

PNG to WebP – frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to WebP?

Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, add your PNG images, choose the “WebP quality” and click “Convert to WebP”. Each PNG becomes a .webp file with the same name, ready to upload to your website or shop.

Why do I get “Your browser can’t create WebP images”?

Your browser can display WebP but cannot create it – this is the case in Safari. Instead of handing you a wrong file, the tool stops with this message; use Chrome, Edge or Firefox. On iPhone and iPad all browsers use Safari’s engine, so you may see the message there too – a computer or an Android phone works.

Does a transparent PNG stay transparent as WebP?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so transparent backgrounds of logos, icons and cut-out product photos are kept. If you need a format that works in every browser for creating files, PNG to JPG is an alternative, but it turns transparent areas white.

Which WebP quality should I choose for my website?

“High” (the default, quality 90%) looks the same as the PNG for photos and most graphics. “Medium – smaller files” (75%) gives noticeably smaller files and suits blog images and thumbnails. For screenshots with small text, check the result at 100% zoom before publishing.

How much smaller is WebP than PNG?

It depends on the image. Photos and detailed screenshots saved as PNG usually shrink a lot; simple graphics with few colours are often already small as PNG and shrink less. The file size of each result is shown before you download it.

Is the WebP created here lossless?

No. The tool creates compressed (lossy) WebP files with the quality you choose, which is what makes them small. Even at “High” there may be tiny differences, so keep your original PNG as the master copy.

Do all browsers show WebP images?

Yes. All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP, so you can use the files on your website without a fallback for modern visitors. Only creating WebP in the browser needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

How large can a PNG be for conversion to WebP?

Each PNG can be up to 30 MB and 50 megapixels. You can add many PNGs at once and download all WebP files together as a ZIP.

Are my website images uploaded when I convert PNG to WebP?

No. Your browser’s own WebP encoder does the conversion on your device, so unpublished product photos and designs stay private until you upload them yourself.
