Why PNG instead of JPG?

PNG stores images without loss. Thin lines, small text, diagrams and screenshots stay crisp, without the blurry edges and colour blocks that JPG compression can create around letters. That makes PNG the better choice when a PDF page will be placed into a presentation, a wiki, a design tool or technical documentation.

The trade-off is size: a PNG of a photo-heavy page is larger than a JPG of the same page. For photos and scans, PDF to JPG is usually the more practical option.

What you get

  • One PNG file per PDF page, numbered in page order.
  • 150 DPI for screens and documents, 220 DPI for printing or zooming in.
  • A white background, exactly as the page looks in a PDF viewer.
  • Very large pages are scaled down slightly so they work on phones as well.

About PDF and PNG files

PDF (Portable Document Format)
PDF files look the same on every device and are the standard for invoices, statements, contracts and reports. Digital PDFs store real text; scanned PDFs store images of pages. All PDF tools →
PNG
PNG is a lossless image format that keeps text and sharp edges crisp. Most screenshots are saved as PNG, and it supports transparent backgrounds.

PDF to PNG – frequently asked questions

Should I convert my PDF to PNG or to JPG?

Choose PNG for pages with text, lines, charts or diagrams: PNG is lossless, so edges stay crisp. For photo-heavy pages or scans, PDF to JPG is usually the better choice, because JPG files are smaller.

Is the PNG background transparent?

No. Each page is rendered on a white background, exactly as a PDF viewer shows it, so the PNG has no transparent areas. The image itself is lossless, so text and lines stay sharp.

What resolution will the PNG images have?

You choose it under “Resolution”: Normal (150 DPI) or High (220 DPI). A US Letter page becomes 1275 × 1650 pixels at 150 DPI and 1870 × 2420 pixels at 220 DPI. 150 DPI suits screens and slides; 220 DPI is better for printing or zooming in.

Why is a large page converted at a lower resolution than I chose?

Very large pages, such as posters or plans, are scaled down so each image stays at about 16 megapixels at most. This keeps the conversion working in phone browsers. Normal document pages like A4 or US Letter are not affected, even at 220 DPI.

How do I get the PNG pages out of the ZIP on iPhone or Android?

On iPhone, open the ZIP in the Files app and tap it to unpack it; on Android, most file manager apps can extract it. If you only need a few pages, tap their previews under “Or download single files” instead – each one saves directly as a PNG.

How do I put PDF pages into PowerPoint as images?

Convert the PDF to PNG and insert the images in PowerPoint with Insert > Pictures; the lossless PNG keeps small text readable on slides. If you want the whole PDF as a presentation, PDF to PPT creates one slide per page for you.

Why do I get “This file could not be read as a PDF”?

The file is damaged or is not really a PDF – for example an incomplete download or another file renamed to .pdf. Check whether it opens in a PDF viewer; if it does, save it there as a new PDF and try again.

Is PDF to PNG free for long PDFs?

Yes. There is no page limit, no signup and no watermark, and the PDF can be up to 100 MB. Long PDFs take a bit longer because each page is rendered on your device.

Is my PDF uploaded when I convert it to PNG?

No. The pages are rendered in your browser, so drafts, designs or internal documentation stay on your device and are never stored on a server.
