Where GIF files still turn up

Many older scanners, fax programs and archive systems saved documents as GIF, and charts or diagrams from older websites are often GIFs too. A PDF is the better format to send, print or file them: it opens everywhere and keeps all pages together in one document.

How the PDF is built

Need JPG or PNG photos in the same PDF? Convert those with JPG to PDF, then put both PDFs together with Combine PDF.

  • Each GIF becomes one page, in the order of the list.
  • Images are centred on A4 or US Letter pages with a small margin and are never stretched.
  • Colours are kept exactly; no extra compression is applied.
  • Animated GIFs are placed as a still image of their first frame – a PDF can't play animations.

About GIF and PDF files

GIF
GIF is an old image format for simple graphics and short animations. It supports only 256 colours per image.
PDF (Portable Document Format)
PDF files look the same on every device and are the standard for invoices, statements, contracts and reports. Digital PDFs store real text; scanned PDFs store images of pages. All PDF tools →

GIF to PDF – frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated GIF in the PDF?

Only the first frame is used, as a still image, because a PDF can’t play animations. If you need a different frame, save it as its own GIF in an image editor first.

Why does my small GIF look pixelated in the PDF?

Each GIF is scaled to fill an A4 or US Letter page apart from a small margin, so a small icon or old web graphic is enlarged and its pixels become visible. No detail is added that isn’t in the file, so use the largest version of the GIF you have.

Are the colours of my GIF kept exactly?

Yes. The GIF is decoded and stored losslessly in the PDF, so colours and sharp edges stay as in the file, and it is never stretched. Transparent areas appear white on the page.

Can I put GIF and JPG images into the same PDF?

Not in one step – this page only accepts .gif files. Turn the JPG or PNG images into a PDF with JPG to PDF, then join both PDFs with Combine PDF.

How do I combine several GIFs into one PDF?

Add all GIFs, sort them with the arrows (or drag them on a computer) and click “Convert to PDF”. Each GIF becomes one page in the order of the list, on an A4 or US Letter page. Wide GIFs automatically get a landscape page.

Why does it say my GIF “could not be read as an image”?

The browser couldn’t decode the file – it may be damaged, or it is another format that was renamed to .gif. Check whether it opens in an image viewer; if it does, save it again as GIF and add it once more.

Is GIF to PDF free, and how large can a GIF be?

Yes, it is free with no signup and no watermark. Each GIF can be up to 30 MB, and there is no fixed limit on how many you add.

Are my GIF files uploaded to make the PDF?

No. The GIFs are decoded and placed into the PDF in your browser, so old scans and archive images stay on your device and are not stored anywhere.
