Faster pages with the same photos
Online shops, portfolios and blogs are often slow because of their photos. At similar visible quality, a WebP image is usually clearly smaller than a JPG, so pages load faster – particularly on mobile connections. Many shop systems and content management systems accept WebP uploads directly.
What to keep in mind
The WebP encoder of your browser is used, so this works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Safari shows a message instead of producing a wrong file.
- Keep your original JPGs: WebP is meant for publishing, the JPG stays your master copy.
- Converting an already compressed JPG can't bring back detail – it only stores the image more efficiently.
- “Medium” quality is a good choice for large galleries; use “High” for hero images.
- Width and height stay the same. To make images smaller in pixels, resize them before converting.
About JPG and WebP files
- JPG / JPEG
- JPG is the most common photo format, used by phone cameras and on the web. It keeps file sizes small by compressing image data.
- WebP
- WebP is a modern image format from Google that makes web images smaller than JPG or PNG. Many websites deliver their pictures as WebP, but some programs and upload forms still don't accept it.

JPG to WebP – frequently asked questions
How do I convert JPG to WebP?
In Chrome, Edge or Firefox, add your JPG or JPEG photos, choose the “WebP quality” and click “Convert to WebP”. Every photo is saved as a .webp file with the same name.
Is WebP better than JPG for websites?
For publishing on the web, usually yes: at similar visible quality a WebP file is smaller than a JPG, so pages load faster, especially on phones. Many shop systems and content management systems accept WebP uploads directly.
Can I convert JPG to WebP in Safari or on an iPhone?
Not in Safari: it can show WebP images but can’t create them, so the tool displays a message instead of producing a wrong file. On iPhone and iPad all browsers use Safari’s engine, so the same can happen there. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
A little, because the photo is compressed again. At “High” (quality 90%) the difference is hard to see; “Medium – smaller files” (75%) trades some detail for smaller files. Keep your original JPGs as master copies – converting back from WebP can’t restore detail.
Will the WebP always be smaller than my JPG?
Usually, but not always. A JPG that is already strongly compressed may shrink only a little, or end up slightly larger at “High”. In that case try “Medium – smaller files” or keep the JPG.
Will my photos be resized when converted to WebP?
No. Width and height stay exactly the same; only the file format and file size change. The tool has no resize option, so large camera photos keep their full resolution.
Does the WebP keep the photo’s EXIF data, like date and camera?
No. Each photo is redrawn and saved as a new image, so metadata such as the capture date, camera model or GPS location is not copied into the WebP. Keep the original JPG if you need that information.
How large can my JPG photos be?
Up to 30 MB and 50 megapixels per photo – a typical 12-megapixel phone photo is well within that. You can add a whole gallery at once and download all WebP files as one ZIP (named after the first photo) or one by one.
Are my photos uploaded when I convert them to WebP?
No. The photos are converted by your browser on your own device and are never sent to a server or stored.
How do I convert a WebP back to JPG?
Use WebP to JPG – it works in every browser, including Safari. The result is a new JPG, so it won’t be identical to your original photo; if you still have the original JPG, use that instead.
