PNG instead of JPG: when transparency matters
Logos, icons, stickers and product cut-outs on websites are often WebP files with a transparent background. Converting them to JPG would fill that background with white. PNG keeps the transparency, so the image can be placed on any colour in a presentation, a design tool or a document.
PNG is also lossless: the converted image looks exactly like the WebP you started with, and it doesn't lose quality when you edit and save it several times.
Good to know
- Width and height in pixels stay the same.
- PNG files are usually larger than WebP – that is the price of lossless storage.
- Animated WebP images become a still image (the first frame).
- Only convert images you are allowed to use; changing the format doesn't change the rights.
About WebP and PNG files
- WebP
- WebP is a modern image format from Google that makes web images smaller than JPG or PNG. Many websites deliver their pictures as WebP, but some programs and upload forms still don't accept it.
- PNG
- PNG is a lossless image format that keeps text and sharp edges crisp. Most screenshots are saved as PNG, and it supports transparent backgrounds.

WebP to PNG – frequently asked questions
How do I convert WebP to PNG?
Add one or more WebP images and click “Convert to PNG”. There is no quality setting, because PNG is lossless. Each image is saved as a PNG with the same name.
Does WebP to PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent areas stay exactly as they are in the PNG, unlike a conversion to JPG, which fills them with white. Logos, icons and cut-out product photos can then be placed on any background colour.
Is any quality lost when converting WebP to PNG?
No. PNG stores the image exactly as your browser decodes the WebP, pixel for pixel. If the WebP was already compressed with visible artefacts, those stay – the conversion doesn’t add detail, but it doesn’t remove any either.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the WebP file?
WebP usually compresses with some loss, while PNG keeps every pixel, so the PNG needs more space. If you don’t need transparency and want a smaller file, WebP to JPG is the better choice.
Can I use the PNG in Word, PowerPoint or a design tool?
Yes. PNG opens in Word, PowerPoint, Google Slides and practically every image editor or design tool. A transparent background stays transparent there, so the image sits cleanly on coloured slides.
What happens to an animated WebP when I convert it to PNG?
It is saved as a still PNG of the first frame. PNG files from this tool don’t contain animation.
Can I convert a whole folder of WebP files to PNG in one go?
Yes – select all WebP files in the folder at once (or drag them onto the page) rather than the folder itself. They are converted one after the other and you download them as one ZIP file or individually.
Is there a limit on WebP file size or resolution?
Yes: up to 30 MB per file and up to 50 megapixels per image. An image above 50 megapixels stops the conversion with a message that it is too large to convert in the browser.
Does WebP to PNG work in Safari on Mac and iPhone?
Yes. Safari can read WebP images and create PNG files, so this conversion works there just like in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Only the opposite direction – creating WebP – isn’t possible in Safari.
Do my WebP images stay on my device during conversion?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser, so the images are never uploaded and nothing is stored on a server.
