A readable PDF from plain text

Text files have no layout: opened on another device, they appear in a random font, lines run off the screen and printing cuts them at odd places. The converter places the text on proper pages with margins, wraps long lines at the page edge and starts a new page when one is full. Empty lines are kept, so paragraphs stay apart.

Languages and characters

Formatting such as bold text or Markdown headings is not interpreted – the PDF shows the text exactly as it is in the file. Scripts like Chinese, Japanese or Hebrew are not included in the fonts yet.

  • Latin letters with accents and umlauts, Greek and Cyrillic use the Noto Sans font.
  • Arabic lines use Noto Sans Arabic and are aligned to the right.
  • UTF-8 files and older Windows (ANSI) text files are both recognised.
  • Tabs become spaces; the text in the PDF stays selectable and searchable.

About Plain and PDF files

Plain text (TXT)
A TXT file contains only characters – no fonts, colours or layout. It opens in every editor, can be searched and copied easily, and is ideal for further processing.
PDF (Portable Document Format)
PDF files look the same on every device and are the standard for invoices, statements, contracts and reports. Digital PDFs store real text; scanned PDFs store images of pages. All PDF tools →

TXT to PDF – frequently asked questions

How do I convert a TXT file to PDF?

Choose your text file, pick a “Page size” (A4 or US Letter) and a “Text size” (Small, Normal or Large), and click “Convert to PDF”. You download a PDF with the same name as your file.

Are long lines cut off in the PDF?

No. Long lines wrap automatically at the page margin, and a new page is added whenever one is full. Empty lines are kept, so your paragraphs stay apart.

Can I convert Markdown (.md) or log files to PDF?

Yes. Files ending in .txt, .text, .log and .md are accepted. Markdown is not interpreted, though – symbols like # and ** appear in the PDF exactly as they are in the file.

Why don’t columns lined up with spaces stay aligned in the PDF?

The PDF uses Noto Sans, a proportional font in which letters have different widths, and tabs are turned into four spaces. Text tables or log columns aligned with spaces can therefore shift. For tabular data, save it as CSV and use CSV to PDF.

My text file was saved as ANSI in Notepad – will accents come out right?

Yes. UTF-8 files and older Windows (ANSI) text files are both recognised, so umlauts and accents appear correctly in the PDF.

Which languages and characters does TXT to PDF support?

Latin letters with accents, Greek, Cyrillic and Arabic; Arabic lines are aligned to the right. Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew and emoji are not included in the embedded fonts and can’t be displayed correctly.

Can I search and copy the text in the finished PDF?

Yes. The text is written into the PDF as real text with embedded fonts, not as an image, so you can select, copy and search it. Page numbers are not added – you can add them with Add page numbers to PDF.

Is the content of my text file sent anywhere?

No. The PDF is created in your browser and your text stays on your device. Only the fonts are loaded from our website when the conversion starts.

How large can the text file be?

Up to 10 MB per file, which is enough for very long texts and logs. TXT to PDF is free and needs no signup.
