Why WebP images cause problems
Websites use WebP because it loads faster than JPG or PNG. When you save such an image, you end up with a .webp file – and older versions of Office, some photo apps, printing services and many upload forms reject it. JPG works everywhere, so converting removes the problem in one step. This happens a lot with product photos from online shops and pictures from news sites, which are usually delivered as WebP.
What changes in the JPG
Please only convert images you are allowed to use; converting the format doesn't change the rights to an image.
- Width and height stay the same.
- Transparent areas become white, because JPG has no transparency.
- Animated WebP images are converted as a still image (the first frame).
- “Medium” quality makes smaller files – fine for sharing, less suited for printing.
About WebP and JPG files
- WebP
- WebP is a modern image format from Google that makes web images smaller than JPG or PNG. Many websites deliver their pictures as WebP, but some programs and upload forms still don't accept it.
- JPG / JPEG
- JPG is the most common photo format, used by phone cameras and on the web. It keeps file sizes small by compressing image data.

WebP to JPG – frequently asked questions
How do I convert a WebP image to JPG?
Add your .webp files, choose the “JPG quality” and click “Convert to JPG”. You get one JPG per image with the same file name.
Why won’t my app or upload form accept a .webp file?
WebP is a web format that browsers display, but some older programs, photo apps, printing services and upload forms don’t support it. Converting the image to JPG solves this, because JPG opens practically everywhere.
How do I save a picture from a website as JPG instead of WebP?
Save the image as usual – many sites deliver it as a .webp file – then add that file here and click “Convert to JPG”. The JPG has the same width and height as the WebP. Only convert images you are allowed to use; changing the format doesn’t change the rights.
What happens to transparent parts of a WebP when I convert it to JPG?
They turn white, because JPG has no transparency. If you need the transparent background, for example for a logo or sticker, convert with WebP to PNG instead.
Can I convert an animated WebP to JPG?
Only as a still image. JPG cannot store animation, so you get a single JPG of the first frame.
Why is the JPG bigger than the original WebP?
WebP compresses more efficiently than JPG, so the same picture usually needs more space as a JPG. Choosing “Medium – smaller files” (JPEG quality 80% instead of 92%) brings the size down. Converting cannot add detail, so the JPG never looks better than the WebP.
What is the maximum WebP file size I can convert?
Each WebP file can be up to 30 MB and up to 50 megapixels. Bigger files are refused when you add them, while the other files you selected are still added. You can convert as many WebP files at once as your device handles and download them as one ZIP.
Do I need a special browser to convert WebP to JPG?
No. Every current browser – Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computer or phone – can read WebP and create JPG, so this conversion works in all of them. Only creating WebP files is limited to some browsers, which doesn’t matter here.
Is the WebP image sent to a server for conversion?
No. Your browser decodes the WebP and saves the JPG on your device; the image is not uploaded or stored anywhere.
How do I put WebP images into a PDF?
Convert them to JPG here first, then add the JPGs to JPG to PDF to combine them into one PDF document. JPG to PDF does not accept WebP files directly.
