How the table is built
Most XML data files contain a list of the same element over and over – <product> inside <products>, <order> inside <orders>, <item> inside a feed. The converter finds the element that repeats most often and turns each one into a row. Simple child elements become columns, attributes become columns starting with @, and nested elements get combined names such as address.city.
If a field appears several times inside one record (for example several <tag> elements), the values are joined in one cell, separated by semicolons. Numbers become real numbers; values with leading zeros stay text.
Limits
- One table per file: if the XML contains several different lists, the longest one is converted.
- Very deeply nested structures produce many columns – remove the ones you don't need in Excel.
- The file must be valid XML; if not, you get a message instead of an empty table.
About XML and Excel files
- XML
- XML stores data in nested, named elements. It is used for data exchange between systems, for exports from business software and for many feeds.
- Excel (XLSX and XLS)
- XLSX is the modern Excel spreadsheet format (Excel 2007 and newer); XLS is the older format. Both store data in rows, columns and sheets, and open in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers. All Excel tools →

XML to Excel – frequently asked questions
How do I open an XML file as an Excel table?
Choose your .xml file and click “Convert to Excel”. The records are detected automatically, and you get an XLSX file with one sheet named “Data” and the field names in the first row. It opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
Which XML structures can be converted to Excel?
XML files with a list of repeated elements, such as <product> inside <products> or <order> inside <orders>, work best. The element that repeats most often becomes one row each. If nothing repeats, the whole file becomes a single row. For data in JSON format, use JSON to Excel.
How are XML attributes shown in Excel?
Each attribute gets its own column, marked with @ – for example @id or @currency. Attributes of nested elements keep their path, such as address.@type. They appear in the same row as the element’s other fields.
How are nested and repeated XML elements handled?
Nested elements become columns with combined names, such as address.city. If a simple element repeats inside one record, for example several <tag> elements, their values are joined in one cell, separated by semicolons. Deep structures can produce many columns, which you can delete in Excel.
Why does the Excel file contain only part of my XML data?
Only one table is created per file: the longest list of identical elements under one parent. Other lists in the file are not converted. If a nested list – say many <item> elements inside one <order> – is longer than your main list, that nested list becomes the table; split or simplify the XML in that case.
Are numbers in the XML converted to Excel numbers?
Yes, plain numbers like 42 or 19.99 become numeric cells. Values with leading zeros (such as 00123), thousands separators or currency symbols stay text, and so do dates. Very long digit strings also stay text so they don’t lose digits.
What do the errors “not valid XML” and “No data was found” mean?
“Not valid XML” means the file has a syntax problem, often an unclosed tag or an & that is not written as &. “No data was found” means the file parsed but contains no text values or attributes to put in columns. An empty file gets its own message.
How are XML namespaces like g:price shown in Excel?
The prefix is kept in the column name, so an element <g:price> becomes a column called g:price. This is common in product feeds. You can rename the column headers in Excel afterwards.
How large can an XML file be for conversion to Excel?
Up to 30 MB per file, one file at a time, free and without an account. Only files with the .xml extension are accepted. Very large files depend on your device’s memory, since everything runs in the browser.
Is it safe to open an XML file from another system here?
Yes. The XML is read as data in your browser – nothing in it is executed and the file is not uploaded. That makes it suitable for exports from business software that contain customer or order data.
