Which JSON works
The converter looks for the list of records in your file. A list of objects such as [{"id": 1, "name": "Anna"}, …] becomes a table with one row per object. A list of lists becomes rows as they are. If the list is wrapped in an object – like {"data": [ … ]} from many APIs – the list is found automatically, and a single object becomes a single row.
Nested data, explained
If the file is not valid JSON, you get a message with the approximate position of the problem, for example a missing comma or quote.
- Nested objects become their own columns, for example address.city and address.zip.
- Lists inside a record are written as JSON text in one cell.
- Fields that only some records have get empty cells in the other rows.
- Columns appear in the order the fields first occur.
About JSON and Excel files
- JSON
- JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard data format of web APIs and apps. It stores records as named fields, which makes it easy for programs to read.
- Excel (XLSX and XLS)
- XLSX is the modern Excel spreadsheet format (Excel 2007 and newer); XLS is the older format. Both store data in rows, columns and sheets, and open in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers. All Excel tools →

JSON to Excel – frequently asked questions
How do I convert a JSON file to Excel?
Choose a .json file and click “Convert to Excel”. You get an XLSX file with one sheet named “Data”: the first row holds the field names, and every record becomes a row. To turn an edited table back into JSON, use Excel to JSON.
Which JSON structures can be converted to an Excel table?
A list of objects (one row per object), a list of lists (rows taken as they are, without an extra header row), a single object (one row) and an object that wraps one list. A list of plain values like [1, 2, 3] becomes one column named “value”. A file that contains just one value, such as a number or a string, gives an error message.
My API response wraps the records, like {"data": [...]} – which part ends up in Excel?
If the top-level object contains exactly one list, that list becomes the table and the other top-level fields (such as a total count) are left out. If it contains two or more lists, the whole object becomes a single row, with each list written as JSON text in one cell. In that case, cut the file down to the list you need first.
How are nested objects and arrays converted into columns?
Nested objects are flattened into dotted column names such as address.city and address.zip, at any depth. Arrays inside a record are written as JSON text in one cell, for example ["red","blue"]. They are not split into extra rows.
What happens when my JSON records have different fields?
Every field that appears in any record gets its own column, in the order the fields first occur. Records without a field get an empty cell in that column. Nothing is dropped because the first record is missing a key.
Are numbers, true/false and dates from JSON real Excel values?
Numbers stay numbers and true/false become Excel TRUE/FALSE values, while null becomes an empty cell. Date strings such as "2026-01-15" stay text, because JSON has no date type – convert them in Excel if you need to calculate with them.
Why does JSON to Excel say my file is not valid JSON?
The file has a syntax error, such as a missing comma, an unclosed quote or bracket, or a trailing comma after the last item. The message shows the approximate position (“problem near character …”), so you can jump to that spot in a text editor. Fix it there and convert again.
Can I convert JSON Lines (.jsonl or NDJSON) to Excel?
Not directly. Only .json files are accepted, and one object per line without surrounding brackets is not valid JSON. Put the lines inside [ ] and separate them with commas, save the file as .json, and it converts as a normal list of records.
Is there a size limit for converting JSON to Excel?
Each .json file can be up to 50 MB, one file per conversion, free and without an account. An empty list gives the message “The JSON list is empty – there is nothing to convert.” The XLSX opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
Is my JSON data sent to a server during the conversion?
No. The JSON is parsed and the Excel file is built in your browser, so API exports with personal or internal data stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded or stored.
