When you need PNG instead of JPG
Some editors, design tools, app stores and upload forms only accept PNG. PNG is also the right format when an image will be edited several times: every time a JPG is saved again, it loses a little quality, while a PNG stays exactly the same no matter how often you save it. That makes PNG a good working copy for screenshots, diagrams or scans that you still want to crop, mark up or annotate.
What the conversion can and can't do
- The PNG looks exactly like your JPG – every pixel is kept.
- The PNG is usually larger than the JPG, because PNG compresses without loss.
- Converting does not remove existing JPG artefacts or add a transparent background – the background stays as it is in the photo.
About JPG and PNG files
- JPG / JPEG
- JPG is the most common photo format, used by phone cameras and on the web. It keeps file sizes small by compressing image data.

JPG to PNG – frequently asked questions
How do I change a JPG to PNG?
Add one or more JPG or JPEG images and click “Convert to PNG”. There is no quality setting to choose, because PNG stores the image without loss. Each file keeps its name and gets the extension .png.
Does converting JPG to PNG make the picture sharper?
No. The PNG keeps every pixel of the JPG exactly as it is, including any blur or compression blocks the JPG already has – lost detail cannot be restored. What PNG does give you is a copy that loses no further quality when you edit and save it again.
Why is my PNG several times bigger than the JPG?
PNG compresses without loss, so a photo needs much more space than in the compressed JPG format. That is normal and does not mean anything went wrong. If you need a small file for a website, keep the JPG or use JPG to WebP.
Can I get a transparent background by converting JPG to PNG?
No. A JPG contains no transparency, so the background in the PNG looks exactly like in the photo, usually white or coloured. The tool only changes the format; it does not remove backgrounds.
Does it accept .jpeg and .JPG files?
Yes. Files ending in .jpg or .jpeg are accepted, in upper or lower case. Other photo formats such as HEIC or .jfif are refused with “not a supported file type”.
How many JPGs can I convert to PNG at once, and how big can they be?
There is no fixed limit on the number of images; each JPG can be up to 30 MB and 50 megapixels. With several images you download all PNGs together as a ZIP file or each one separately. Very large batches depend on your device’s memory, because everything runs in the browser.
One of my JPGs failed – are the other images still converted?
No. The conversion stops at the image that could not be read or was too large, and the message names that file. Remove it from the list with the remove button and click “Try again” to convert the rest.
Can I convert JPG to PNG on an iPhone?
Yes. It works in Safari and every other current browser, because creating PNG files is supported everywhere. Pick the photos from your library or the Files app; the PNGs are saved like any other download.
Are my photos uploaded when I convert JPG to PNG?
No. Your browser opens each photo and saves it as PNG directly on your device; nothing is sent to a server or stored. You can convert private photos and scans without sharing them.
How do I put my converted PNGs into one PDF?
Use PNG to PDF: add the PNG files, put them in the right order and create one PDF from them. That tool also accepts JPGs directly, so you can skip the conversion if the PDF is all you need.
