Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which makes screenshots and photos saved as PNG surprisingly large. Many upload forms, online shops and email services prefer or require JPG, and some have a file size limit. Converting to JPG usually makes a photo-like image several times smaller while it still looks the same on screen.

What happens to transparency

JPG cannot store transparency. Transparent areas of a PNG – for example around a logo – become white in the JPG. If you need to keep a transparent background, stay with PNG.

“High” quality keeps the image visually identical for almost every use. “Medium” saves more space and is fine for photos you share online, but fine text and sharp edges can show slight artefacts.

About PNG and JPG files

PNG
PNG is a lossless image format that keeps text and sharp edges crisp. Most screenshots are saved as PNG, and it supports transparent backgrounds.
JPG / JPEG
JPG is the most common photo format, used by phone cameras and on the web. It keeps file sizes small by compressing image data.

PNG to JPG – frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Add one or more PNG images, choose the “JPG quality” and click “Convert to JPG”. Each PNG becomes a JPG with the same file name, only the extension changes to .jpg.

What happens to the transparent background when I convert PNG to JPG?

It becomes white. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas – for example around a logo – are filled with white before the image is saved; there is no option for another colour. To keep the transparency and still get a small file, use PNG to WebP instead.

Should I choose “High” or “Medium” JPG quality?

“High” (the default, JPEG quality 92%) is the right choice for almost every use and looks the same as the PNG on screen. “Medium – smaller files” (80%) saves more space and is fine for photos you share online. Screenshots with small text and sharp edges can show slight blurring at “Medium”, so check them before you send them.

Why is my JPG not much smaller than the PNG – or even bigger?

PNG is very efficient for simple graphics with flat colours, such as icons, diagrams or charts, while JPG is made for photos. For that kind of image the JPG may be only slightly smaller or even larger. Photos and screenshots with many colours usually shrink a lot; trying “Medium – smaller files” also helps.

Can I convert several PNG files to JPG at once?

Yes. Add as many PNGs as you like – they are converted one after the other with the same quality setting. With more than one image you get a “Download all (… files, ZIP)” button and can also download each JPG on its own. If two files have the same name, the second one gets “-2” added.

Is there a size limit for converting PNG to JPG?

Each PNG can be up to 30 MB and up to 50 megapixels (for example 8000 × 6000 pixels is fine). Larger files are refused when you add them, and an image with more than 50 megapixels stops with a “too large” message. There is no fixed limit on the number of images and the tool is free.

Why does it say my PNG “could not be read as an image”?

Your browser could not open the file – it is probably damaged, or it is not really a PNG even though it ends in .png. The conversion stops at that file and names it. Remove it from the list and convert the other images, or open the file in an image viewer and save it again as PNG.

Does PNG to JPG change the image dimensions?

No. Width and height in pixels stay exactly the same; the image is not resized or cropped. Only the file format – and usually the file size – changes.

Are my PNG screenshots uploaded when I convert them to JPG?

No. The images are decoded and saved as JPG by your own browser, so they never leave your device and are not stored anywhere. That matters for screenshots, which often show messages, emails or other private details.

Can I convert PNG to JPG on my phone?

Yes. Open this page in the browser on your iPhone or Android phone, tap “Choose files” and pick the PNGs from your photos or files. JPG is supported by every browser, so the conversion works in Safari as well as Chrome, and the JPGs are saved like any other download.
